Lot 45 - 13th October

The original Sears Crossing railway signal box plate below, and in situ 1963.

A piece of real railway history went under the hammer at Cameo on the 13th October 2010. The original Sears Crossing sign, from just outside Lighton Buzzard in England, site of the now infamous Great Train Robbery.

The scene of the infamous Great Train Robbery in Buckinghamshire on August 8th 1963. Sears Crossing was the exact spot where the train robbers brought the travelling post office train to a halt by tampering with the signal box.

The green light had been covered up and a 6 volt battery had be connected to the red light. The Glasgow to Euston service stopped at the red light where the robbers took control of the train by knocking unconscious the driver of the locomotive.

The robbers then moved the train further up the track to Bridego Bridge and stole £2.3 million - the equivalent of around £40 million in today's money.

Travel and Advertising material can be highly collectible, nostalgic and of beautiful quality. This subject range captures decades gone by, and is a crucial record of how times used to be, whether it be a stunning Travel Poster depicting a Bathing Art Deco Beauty from the Roaring 20's, an Enamel Shop Plaque, a British Railways totem from a station you used to travel from or a Ski poster promoting a glamorous Swiss resort.

Well known artists such as Cappiello, Cassandre, Norman Wilkinson, Terrance Cuneo, Abram Games, Edward Mcknight Kauffer and Bernard Villemot to name but a few, were commissioned to design posters and advertising materials for famous travel companies and leading world brands.
